Edition Notes

Authorship from BN, Quérard and Cioranescu.

Forms the fourth volume of a set of four volumes, published under the title: Costumes civils actuels de tous les peuples connus. Paris, 1784-1788, and edited by Sylvain Maréchal.

Probably issued in parts or fascicles; each part with separate paging or unpaged, accompanied by one to four leaves of colored plates; signatures on letter press leaves present, but very irregular and forming several series.

Illustrated, colored, engraved title page, surrounded by a double frame; signed: Daisrais, del. Mixelle, J. Sculp. François, Scrip.

Date of publication on title page precedes place of publication and publisher's statement.

For an account of the paging, signatures and illustrations found in the present copy see the John Carter Brown Library's bibliographical file.

In addition to the descriptions and illustrations of costumes of the peoples of America (from Greenland to Patagonia), also those of some Pacific Islanders and of the Chukchi (Arctic people of Northeastern Asia) are included.

Contains brief lists of vocabulary, with French equivalents, for several native languages of the Americas as well as the South Sea islands. The following page numbers refer to separate pagings within each of the sectiors: Moeurs et coutumes des habitans des isles Sandwich (2 dozen entries, p. 20); Notice historique sur les insulaires de Mangeéa (13 entries, p. 3); Moeurs et coutumes des Indiens, habitant les deserts du Chili (6 entries, v.1, p. 6); Moeurs et coutumes des Indiens de Quito, province du Perou (29 entries, p. 13-14; Notice historique sur les Mexicains (9 entries, p. 12); Moeurs et coutumes des habitans de Nootka (2 dozen entries, p. 13-14); Moeurs et coutumes des Oonalashkains (17 entries including numbers, p. 8); Notice historique sur les habitans de la baye Chacktoole a lentrée de Norton Yupik.
